Three overarching goals:
Heading
Goal #1:
Fill gaps in research and data on substance use in the Canadian tourism industry;
Heading
Goal #2:
Develop resources and guides to help tourism employers address risks, improve responses to managing potential substance use situations and improve employee support options.
Heading
Goal #3:
Promote inclusivity and accommodation options for tourism employees who use substances.
Process
We reviewed research on substance use and tourism, conducted focus groups with managers and employees in the sector, and conducted interviews with employees who had lived experience with substance use and work. To ensure products were relevant and met expectations, we consulted with employers, employees with lived experience and Tourism HR Canada throughout the project.
Created Resources
Combining the research and our expertise, we developed:
- An educational toolkit that covers risk and protective factors, hiring considerations, managing incidents, accommodation considerations and a return-to-work guide
- A list of tourism-related resources for employers
- A printable staff poster summarizing key messages and support options
- A summary of current research on substance use and the tourism industry
- A report on the results of the focus groups and interviews
