Roles and responsibilities
Kate Stoysich is a Research and Policy Analyst with CCSA. She works with groups across Canada through the Canadian Community Epidemiology Network on Drug Use initiative, supporting network expansion and node development. She brings people together to build relationships and develop collaborative programs and processes that improve the lives of people who use substances. She has also been instrumental in developing CCSA’s AI early-warning tool with York University and the University of Toronto.
About Kate
Kate joined CCSA as a practicum student in May 2024 before joining full time in March 2026. She’s passionate about her work and believes the experiences of people who use substances, and those who work with them, are critical to strengthening the evidence base on substance use and policy.
Before moving to Canada from Oregon, U.S.A., Kate spent more than 10 years in public health across clinical, community and academic settings, focusing on health promotion, prevention and mental health. She also served three years as a United States Peace Corps volunteer in rural Paraguay. After years of working with people impacted by mental health issues, Kate naturally transitioned into the area of substance use and addiction, given its comorbidity with mental health diagnoses.
Kate holds a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, a Master of Arts in Global Studies from the University of Oregon and a Master of Public Health from the University of Ottawa.
Outside of work, Kate loves nature and spends as much time outdoors as possible gardening and hiking. She also enjoys a good book and a cup of tea, as well as learning languages in her spare time.
