About Dirk

Biography

Dr. Dirk Huyer received his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1986. He has served as a coroner in Ontario since 1992 with involvement in over 5,000 death investigations. He served as Regional Supervising Coroner for five years prior to his appointment as Chief Coroner for the Province of Ontario in March 2014.

Dr. Huyer has a strong commitment to collaboration and cross-sector engagement in addressing substance-related mortality. Recognizing the critical importance of translating individual death investigations into actionable insights, he has championed robust data collection and analysis practices to inform those in positions to intervene and prevent harm.

He brings a unique and comprehensive blend of health expertise, strategic leadership, and cross-sector collaboration that will support the mission and mandate of the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction.

Dr. Huyer joined the Board in January 2026.
